Nonimmigrant Temporary Visas

A foreign national who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for temporary stay or an immigrant visa for lawful permanent residence, also know as a "green card."

A nonimmigrant visa grants a foreign national temporary admission to the United States (U.S.) for a specific purpose. Nonimmigrants enter the U.S. for a temporary period of time, and once in the U.S. they are restricted to the activity or reason for which their visa was issued. They may have more than one type of nonimmigrant visa stamp in their passport but they can only be admitted under only one nonimmigrant visa category.  It is this nonimmigrant visa category which determines a nonimmigrant's status once in the United States.

Each nonimmigrant visa (NIV) category gives a foreign national temporary status in the United States.  Each carries with it its own unique qualification criteria, permissible activities and limitation as to the duration of status in the United States.  Some categories such as the highly-sought-after H-1B category for professionas have quota limitations per fiscal year.
